AWARDS AND COMMENDATIONS

BEST LOCAL MEDIA COVERAGE 2009 - VOLLEYBALL AUSTRALIA

NUMBER 1 FOR SERVING OUR COMMUNITY IN 2008

Courier journalist Genevieve Cooper won the 2008 Excellence in Journalism award
for her coverage of the fraud perpetrated by Stirling accountant Allan McFarlane.

The Courier was named the best country newspaper for 2008 in SA at the Country Press Awards.

The paper was judged the best in the over 6000 circulation category and is the seventh time in the past 10 years it has been awarded the title of SA's leading non-metropolitan paper.

In a stellar night for The Courier, journalist Genevieve Cooper won the Excellence in Journalism award for her coverage of the fraud perpetrated by Stirling accountant Allan McFarlane, and Judy Norris won the Community Profile award for her story about Bridgewater man Dennis Noble.

The newspaper also placed second in the award for best advertising feature and third for the best front page and editorial writing.

Judge Graham Gorrel, the president of the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers' Association, said The Courier had strong editorial values and a commitment to balanced, hard-hitting journalism.

"Its readers expect nothing less and they got it in spades through powerful front pages and early news reports and one of the best sports sections I have seen in regional newspapers," he said. "The advertising department was enhanced by well crafted and designed display advertisements."

Courier managing director Norman Marston said the newspaper continually strived for excellence and the best newspaper award was the result of hard work and commitment by all the staff.

"We have always worked to deliver the best product for our community," he said. "I'm particularly pleased to win two journalism awards ... that's the foundation of a great newspaper and on which everything else can be built."
