Gathering together

1 min read

The Hills region has been given a great opportunity this weekend to showcase what it has to offer, as Mt Barker gears up to host two AFL games as part of Gather Round.

Last year Mt Barker and its surrounds proved that it could host a national event effectively and this year was rewarded with another two AFL games.

Gather Round games are coveted around the State, especially by regional communities that don’t normally get the opportunity to reap the economic benefits that large-scale events provide.

Gather Round draws people from around the country and last year brought an estimated $85.8m into the State’s economy and generated a 22% increase in revenue for Mt Barker’s hospitality and dining industry across the weekend.

There will also be positive flow-on effects other local businesses including service stations, hotel and motels and retailers, while word-of-mouth will help to make the Hills a destination well into the future.

The Mt Barker Council has organised additional events that will ensure Gather Round doesn’t just draw people to Mt Barker, but also to Hahndorf, where a footy festival will be held.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Swans and Melbourne Demons will host footy clinics at the pop-up park in the centre of Mt Barker, while the West Coast Eagles will run their own clinic, plus a Captain’s Run will be held at the Summit Sport and Recreation Park.

An AFL Family Zone will be available for the young ones to try their hand at AusKick on a mini football oval, while The Terrace – a precinct offering Hills food, wine and spirits – will keep the adults fed and watered.

While the influx of fans attending the games may cause inconvenience for local residents over the weekend, it’s important for everyone to remember the benefits these games and associated activities will provide for the region’s economy.

So this weekend let’s all join in the footy fever and embrace what a fantastic event this is.
