Town’s destruction
I HAD the great pleasure of staying with an old friend at Mt Barker last October, a charming place I knew 45 years ago when living in Adelaide.
Alas, its charm is now being rapidly destroyed by local plans to build an enormous number of houses, thus destroying the rural ambience of the place.
Already local infrastructure is insufficient to support the current population, which is likely to reach 50,000 within a few years.
Local politicians should be ashamed of these plans, which reveal a mixture of ignorance, avarice and incompetence.
They should also apologise for the ineptitude they have displayed in turning the recently built Summit Sport and Recreation Park into an expensive white elephant.
I have dealt with many local and national politicians in my time in the UK, but those overseeing the development of Mt Barker appear uniquely reprehensible.
